Mesa Comprehensive Safety Action Plan – Mesa, AZ

project OVERVIEW

The City of Mesa is committed to a 30% reduction in fatalities and serious injuries caused by motor vehicle crashes by 2030. To achieve this goal, Y2K Engineering and the City are developing a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan (CSAP). The plan, funded by an SS4A planning grant, evaluates the most important contributing factors in fatal and serious crashes using public input and data-driven analysis. The action plan serves as a framework for enhancing safety in Mesa by identifying strategies and projects, and building a community culture of safety to strength the city’s approach to roadway safety and save lives.

A significant portion of the work Y2K performed was related to community and stakeholder engagement which included development of a full branding package with logo, use guidelines, a color palette and a set of plan specific icons; a website with a survey, map comment activity, opt in form, project information, contact methods and links to related content; in person outreach with an engaging selfie station; and social media, print and online advertisements, presentations, fact sheets, posters and frequently asked questions. The public engagement was extraordinarily successful even though Mesa had recently completed a large outreach effort related to their Transportation Master Plan. Successes include print and television earned media coverage and over 4,200 public comments.

Y2K delivered Mesa’s Plan which included safety planning and education, street design and reconstruction projects and policy and operational changes. The plan meets all SS4A self-eligibility criteria and positions the city for future successful SS4A Implementation grant funding.
