Littleton School Safety Evaluations – Littleton, CO
project OVERVIEW
The project entailed a comprehensive review of transportation safety conditions citywide, encompassing eleven charter, elementary, middle, and high schools. Y2K performed AM, PM and lunchtime observations at each school, adhering to a consolidated schedule.
Safety recommendations were crafted for each school, grounded in national best practices, industry standards and tailored to local conditions. A comprehensive report was prepared to document existing conditions, observations, and school-specific recommendations. Standardized recommendations were also provided for consistent signing and striping of school zones and school crossings to ensure citywide uniformity support detailed, site-specific improvements.
Significant engagement with district and school staff was a key component of the project. Following the observations, Y2K facilitated a School Transportation Safety Summit, bringing together representatives from participating schools, Littleton Public Schools administration, and City transportation officials. This summit fostered dialogue among stakeholders, highlighted safety trends, solicited input on shared concerns, and provided feedback on resource needs for implementing changes. Prior to the start of the 2024/2025 school year, Y2K met individually with schools, along with representatives from the district and the city, to review draft recommendations and gather feedback. Additionally, Y2K prepared supportive pick-up/drop-off materials to aid communication with parents.
