Mesa County Safety Action Plan – Mesa County, CO
project OVERVIEW
The RTPO Mesa County Safety Action Plan, focuses on creating a foundational framework to enhance roadway safety by reducing or eliminating fatalities and injuries. Mesa County is home to the Cities of Grand Junction and Fruita and the Towns of Palisade, Collbran, and DeBeque.
Y2K’s thorough analysis of crash characteristics across all road users—drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists —yields insights into risk factors and specific crash types. By evaluating both rural and urban crash history and trends, the plan includes proactive strategies for intervention, development of ten projects, and creation of two engineering toolboxes, aiming to address safety improvements and for a safer transportation environment throughout the county. The project included five stakeholder engagement and interactive work sessions, and two phases of community involvement, yielding over 1,000 personal interactions. As part of this project, Mesa County RTPO developed and hosted the first ever Western Colorado Transportation Safety Symposium that had over one hundred attendees.
Y2K created a branded Safety Action Plan and supporting materials, such as a Power BI Dashboard, Strategy Toolbox, webpage, 10 Project Cards, 30 Safety Strategies, a High Injury Network (HIN), equity analysis, and a series of technical memoranda.
